March 12, 1956  in Portland, OR . . . One of the most talented and complete players of the 1980s, Dale Murphy won two Most Valuable Player Awards and clubbed 398 homers while maintaining a squeeky-clean image. He was one of the most respected and popular stars of his era. He led the National League in homers, RBI, and slugging twice each. Though he declined rapidly late in his career, in his prime Murphy was compared to Joe DiMaggioWillie Mays and Hank Aaron.

Fun FactoidJack Dunn, Dale Murphy's high school baseball coach, is the one person Murphy credited the most for making him a big leaguer. Coincidentally, a man named Jack Dunn was responsible for discovering Babe Ruth.

In 1983, Dale Murphy became the second Brave (joining Hank Aaron) to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in a season. Murphy blasted 36 homers and stole 30 bases that season.

MilestonesMurphy hit his first home run on September 15, 1977, almost exactly one year to the day that he debuted in the big leagues. It came off Padre hurler Randy Jones.

 March 12, 1921, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis suspends eight members of the Chicago White Sox for their alleged involvement in the fixing of the 1919 World Series. The group includes outfielder Joe Jackson, who batted .375 in the Series. Others banned are Eddie Cicotte, Oscar “Happy” Felsch, Arnold “Chick” Gandil, Fred McMullin, Charles “Swede” Risberg, George “Buck” Weaver, and Claude “Lefty” Williams. None of them will ever play in organized baseball again.

March 12, 1930 in Meridian, ID . . . Vern Law was largely responsible for the Pirates' World Championship in 1960, when he captured the Cy Young Award with a 20-9 record and a league-high 18 complete games. Despite nursing a late-season sprained ankle, he won the first and fourth games of the Series and had a no-decision in the famed seventh game, won by the Pirates on Bill Mazeroski's ninth-inning homer.

March 12, 1934, St. Louis Cardinals rookie Paul “Daffy” Dean ends his holdout. Dean will win 19 games for the Cardinals in his first major league season. Helping them to the 1934 Wrold Series, Dean will win 2 games for the Cardinal's helping them defeat the Tigers for the 1934 Championship.

March 12, 1973: New York Mets manager Yogi Berra fines Willie Mays for leaving the team for two days without notice. “I didn't think I'd have to tell them everytime I cross the street. He made his point and he was right. I made a mistake. I should have told him.” - Willie Mays.

March 12, 1980, slugging outfielder Chuck Klein and former Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Klein won the NL MVP Award in 1932, won the Triple Crown in 1933, appeared in the first two ALL-Star Games.

March 12, 1982 -- Ballantine Books publishes the first of seven annual Bill James Abstracts, bringing the author into the national spotlight for his statistical insight into the game. The sabermetrician's original self-published efforts, written while working the night shift as a security guard at the Stokely-Van Camp's pork and beans cannery, introduces baseball fans to new ways of measuring a player's ability, using stats such as such Runs Created, Power Speed, Isolated Power and it is the introduction to saber stats.

Trivia Answer:  Murphy was a first-round pick in the 1974 amateur draft and made it to the majors at age 20 in 1976 for a cup of coffee as a catcher and again in 77.. He also played first base in 78 and played his final game at catcher in 1979. He moved to the OF in 1980. At first base and catcher, Murphy made 52 errors in 294 games. In the outfield he made 71 in 1,853 games.
