May 12, 1970, Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs becomes the ninth player to join the 500-home run club. It is also his 1,600th career RBI., The future Hall of Famer connects against Atlanta Braves right-hander Pat Jarvis, driving a pitch into the left-field bleachers at Wrigley Field. The ball, after it bounces back onto the field, is retrieved by Braves left fielder Rico Carty, who gives it to Banks. Carty, meanwhile, hits safely in his 30th consecutive game.
Home Run Facts
Banks set a record in 1955 when he slugged five grand slams, the last one off Lindy McDaniel on September 19. The record setting slam came in McDaniel’s first major league start. Banks five base-clearing blasts broke the record previously shared by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ralph Kiner, Frank Schulte, Rudy York, Tommy Henrich, Vince DiMaggio, Sid Gordon, Al Rosen and Ray Boone... Banks also broke Vern Stephen’s record for most home runs by a shortstop in a single season. His slugging vaulted him to the top of baseball – from 1955 to 1960 his 248 home runs were more than anyone else in the majors, including Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron... Banks hit 210 homers as a first baseman, and 277 as a shortstop.

May 12, 1969, At Busch Stadium, St. Louis Cardinals fireballer Bob Gibson becomes the seventh pitcher in National League history to strike out the side on nine pitches. May 12, 1982 - At Royal Stadium, Milwaukee Brewers Paul Molitor hits 3 solo home runs, 2 off Dennis Leonard, including a leadoff home run, and his third off Dan Quisenberry in the 9th. But Milwaukee loses 9-7 to Kansas City as Hal McRae and Greg Pryor drive in three runs each. Molitor will say, "I am not a home run hitter" he added,"I just happened to hit them where the wind was blowing." LISTEN HERE
May 12, 1984, Tiger Stadium - Detroit, Reggie Jackson hits a home run over the right field roof, Sparky Anderson is thrown out of the game in the 9th inning after the umpire calls a double play when Larry Herndon slides out of the basepath to take out the Angels' shortstop. The Tigers lost for the 5th time in 1984, they are 26-5 . At the 40-game mark they are 35-5, the best 40-game start in MLB history.LISTEN HERE
